Greetings by the Speaker

Welcome to the website of the Congress of Deputies, the seat of popular sovereignty, where members of Parliament are called upon to perform the noblest of the functions entrusted to us: represent the citizens of our country and contribute to finding solutions to our common problems. 

Indeed, the Congress of Deputies is the reflection of Spain’s plurality, that is political plurality, obviously, but also that of the diversity of peoples, cultures and languages that coexist in our country. And for that reason, the more our Chamber resembles the real Spain, which is diverse and plural, the more our citizens will feel represented by it.

And the more we can contribute to solving citizens’ problems, the more useful it shall be perceived by all of us. Because politics is the most powerful tool to transform society, and the Congress of Deputies, as main forum for political debate, must be a major engine for social change. 

An engine fuelled by words. Because, to face the challenges ahead of us as a community and to continue making progress towards the future, words are everything and respect for words is essential. Noise, disqualifications, and unnecessary tensions do not represent our citizens, nor do they contribute to solving their problems. It is dialogue and an enriching debate that will help us to understand each other and take the best decisions which, no doubt, will affect your day-to-day life. 

This website is a fundamental channel of communication with you as regards the performance of our functions. Here you will find the activities conducted by MPs and by the institution with a view to promoting a culture of transparency and participation that will help us to make progress towards a higher quality public service.
